About this trip
A day trip from Marsa Alam to Luxor takes you into the heart of ancient Egypt. Early in the morning you travel by air-conditioned vehicle through the Eastern Desert and along the Nile Valley to Luxor, one of the world's greatest open-air museums.
East Bank
The tour begins on Luxor's East Bank at Karnak Temple, the largest temple complex in Egypt. Walk through the Great Hypostyle Hall with its massive columns and learn about the pharaohs who ruled Egypt. Next is Luxor Temple, built mainly by Amenhotep III and Ramses II. It stands in the city center beside the Nile and is linked to Karnak by the Avenue of Sphinxes.
West Bank
After lunch at a local restaurant with Nile or city views, the tour continues to the West Bank. In the Valley of the Kings, burial place of the New Kingdom pharaohs, royal tombs are cut into the mountains and decorated with hieroglyphs about the afterlife. The Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, built into the limestone cliffs of Deir el-Bahari, is one of Egypt's most remarkable architectural achievements. The last stop is the Colossi of Memnon, two giant statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III that guard the ancient necropolis.
A short felucca ride on the Nile can be added at extra cost. In the evening you drive back to Marsa Alam. The trip suits travelers who want to add the temples and tombs of ancient Thebes to a Red Sea holiday.
